Río Lagartos is best known as home to one of the largest populations of American Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) in North America. These elegant birds inhabit the shallow coastal lagoons year-round, feeding on algae and small crustaceans that give their plumage its vibrant pink color. Whether quietly feeding in the shallows or taking flight in spectacular flocks, flamingos create one of the Yucatán Peninsula’s most iconic natural scenes, attracting birdwatchers and photographers from around the world.

The winding lagoons, mangrove forests, and shallow wetlands of Río Lagartos provide ideal habitat for a remarkable variety of herons and waterbirds. Great Blue Herons, egrets, night-herons, Roseate Spoonbills, and many other species thrive here throughout the year, while the distinctive Boat-billed Heron remains one of the reserve’s most sought-after birds. Cruising quietly through the mangrove channels offers exceptional opportunities to observe these birds feeding, resting, and flying within one of Mexico’s richest coastal wetland ecosystems.

Birds in Río Lagartos 拉加托斯湖的鸟类-Vol.01
