Río Lagartos is best known as home to one of the largest populations of American Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) in North America. These elegant birds inhabit the shallow coastal lagoons year-round, feeding on algae and small crustaceans that give their plumage its vibrant pink color. Whether quietly feeding in the shallows or taking flight in spectacular flocks, flamingos create one of the Yucatán Peninsula’s most iconic natural scenes, attracting birdwatchers and photographers from around the world.
